It has beautiful gardens, a cute cafe and "the great telescope" with links to space discovery and scientific innovation. It's real highlight for families is the truly enchaning tree house. My family and I had planned a Mediterranean Cruise departing in May 2020. Like everybody else we could not have imagined what lay in store for 2020 and while we were ultimately relieved that the cruise was cancelled, we were obviously disappointed. Of course our health and that of those close to us was our main concern and we knew the decisions that were made were right, we had been looking forward to our trip abroad. While we still long for Mediterranean Sunshine and Adventure we have made the decision to remain in Ireland this year. We plan to look at this an opportunity to explore this stunning country. Here a few reasons why we would suggest you do likewise:
1. Protect your health and the health and safety of others without the worry of wondering if you will need to self- isolate when you return home.
2. Invest in the local economy - help Ireland get back on track post lockdown.
3. The Food - it's almost impossible to find the quality of food and dining experience that we take for granted in Ireland.
4. Airports - they are tedious and stressful environments at the best of times. Save yourself the hassle and avoid them.
5. The Money - while the cost per night of accommodation and daily spend may be less abroad, consider the total sum of your spend on prepping for your international trip, flight costs, additional baggage fees, transfers etc. A staycation need not me the more expensive option. Self catering accommodation may in fact prove to be more economical than that trip to Spain.
6. Time - Once you pack your car your holiday begins, no time is wasted queuing for Check In and Security.
7. Rediscover Ireland - there's no such thing as bad weather, rather bad clothing so get out there and enjoy this luscious, Emerald Isle. Just think of the time and expense it takes for tourists to travel to Ireland and see what’s been on your doorstep all this time!

Lockdown #2 was a bitter pill to swallow and it was with very heavy hearts that we shut our premises for the second time in 6 months, however we understood that it was necessary for the health and safety of our nation.
With the easing of Level 5 restrictions in sight, we are very excited to reopen our doors to guests on 1st December (Inline with Government Guidelines).

Simply contact Cyril directly to arrange a meeting point in Nenagh Town and off you go. Cyril does not run his tours as a commercial business but rather for the love of walking and the local area. He simply asks that you make a donation to his charity, which supplies pre-used medical equipment to Moldova.

At The Calves Field we enjoy a superb location for wedding parties. We love hosting Wedding Guests and in particular Brides, Grooms and their families. It seems like only yesterday when my husband and I got married at the magnificent Coolbawn Quay @coolbawnquay, just a few miles away. Today, in addition to Coolbawn Quay there are two further locations to choose from - Ashley Park House and Cloughjordan house. @ashleyparkhouse @cloughjordanhouse. We love to make your stay as care free and enjoyable as possible, providing recommendations for local hair / beauty and transport suppliers. Staycation in picturesque rural Ireland:
It is a very strange world we inhabit these days. The lack of certainty around occasions, events and travel has thrown all of our summer plans into disarray. On a positive note, I do feel very privileged to live on our stunning Island with so many hidden gems to enjoy and explore.
Like so many others, we had planned a family holiday abroad this summer. Luckily, we were granted a full refund and now plan to invest in our local economy and have a family staycation in rural Ireland, once our government confirms it is safe to do so.
A staycation enables us to feel safe while reconnecting with family at a social distance. So if, like us, you would like a family break away in a quiet, rural, 'home away from home' where you can self cater or have meals delivered to your door by our local caterer, then a trip to The Calves Field Holiday Rental is a must do. With this in mind I have designed a 7 night itinerary which will keep the whole family entertained and thus make your stay as easy and relaxing as possible.

Day 1:
Stop off at Obama Plaza rest top, Exit 23 on the M7 motorway. Have a bit to eat and travel into nearby Moneygall Village Activity Park and Playground. Or, if it’s a rainy day, exit at Junction 22 for Roscrea Leisure Centre with a very impressive public swimming pool with multiple pools and a big slide.
Arrive at The Calves Field and enjoy catered buffet dinner delivered to the door (Pre booking required, additional charges apply) . Kick back and relax with a bottle of wine and cosy wood fired stove.
Day 2:
Enjoy Water Sports for all the family at Lough Derg Water Sports. (Pre booking required). Then visit nearby Terryglass Village, feed the ducks and follow the Fairy Trail. Enjoy lunch / dinner at The Derg Inn in Terryglass Village, which includes a play area for the little ones.
Day 3:
Visit Portumna Forest Park with buggy friendly trails and a large picnic area. Next visit the recently refurbished Portumna Castle and Tearooms, followed by a not to be missed trip back in time to Famine Time Ireland at Portumna Workhouse Centre. Travel over the bridge and enjoy lunch / dinner at The Ferry Inn Bar.
Day 4:
Visit Bunratty Castle and Folk Park for a fun filled day of Medieval Mystery and Fairy Village Magic.
Next hit Funworld Bowling Alley and stop into the adjacent diner for some tasty treats. (Pre booking is a good idea)
Day 5:
Visit Birr Castle and Gardens with Irelands largest playground tree house, stunning gardens, a cute cafe and the great telescope with links to space discovery and scientific innovation.
Next visit The Stables Cafe / Shop for a bite and a little retail therapy.
Finally enjoy lunch / dinner at local Gastro Bar Kelly's Bar or Pizza at Cristiano's Pizzeria.
Day 6:
Visit the iconic Rock of Cashel and grab a tour.
Next on your way back stop in to Templemore Park and Fairy Trail including Playground and Pitch n Putt.
Then enjoy dinner at The Thatched Cottage outside Nenagh.
Day 7:
Visit Turoe Pet Farm with Inflatable City, Jungle Town and Indoor Sand Area. Enjoy a coffee and a treat in the cafe while the kids explore and play.
Enjoy dinner at Maggie May's restaurant in nearby Loughrea.
Day 8:
- Enjoy a leisurely stroll along the meandering country roads on the doorstep of The Calves Field. In summer months a walk down "The Calla" is a little explorers and nature lovers must.
- Checkout at 11am - late checkout available on request and when possible.

Staycation 2021
So here we go again... while it's looking increasingly unlikely that we will travel abroad this summer, a staycation looks probable. With the arrival of the elusive Covid 19 Vaccine there is, however, a sense of hope and the emergence of light at the end of what feels at times, like a very long tunnel.
On the brightside, we are blessed in Ireland to have an abundance of private holiday homes in low population densities such as coastal and rural areas, which offer the ideal space to vacation safely.
At The Calves Field, we were delighted to welcome all manner of staycationers in 2020, where the large 4 bedroom property confortably accommodates 8 adults. From families, to young professionals to ex pats wishing to reconnect with loved ones we were delighted to be fully booked throughout the July/August period. This self catering property has all the comforts of home with value added services such as in home catering for the nights when want to kick back and chill out.
Lough Derg itself is a stunning, expansive lake located on the River Shannon. It offers a multitude of water sports activities from Paddle Boarding to Gin Cruises to River Cruises, to inflatable obstacle courses to bathing. The area is also a wash with Award wining restaurants and Gastro Bars.

There's life after lockdown
Lockdowns have forced us to look at our local areas with fresh eyes and a new perspective. Where before we would spend hours cooped up in our cars traveling to the cities and well worn tourist trails for fun and activities, once lockdown hit we had no option but to look inwards, think local, get creative and make the most of our lot.
One of the positives to emerge from this is a new found respect and indeed love of the great outdoors and landscape which we are blessed with at Lough Derg. Those who traditionally headed for the Motorways were now heading for the lake for bathing, swimming, forest trails, kayaking, sunbathing, fishing, cruises and the discovery of historical knowledge and folklore.
Lough Derg has so much to offer from Family Fun to Chartered Cruises to Gin Tasting to Guided Kayak Trips and Winter Swimming to Artisan Local Eateries and Gastro Bars. The standard of accommodation from Hotels, to Guesthouses to Luxury Private Holiday Rentals is second to none in Ireland.
