Built in an idyllic rural setting on our family farm, our beautiful country home was lovingly finished to a very high specification with thought for our guests needs visible throughout. Our home, surrounding gardens and local area are ideal for people wishing to get away from it all, relax or spend some time together. It is the perfect base for discovering Lough Derg on the River Shannon, Countryside Adventures, touring Ireland or fattending a wedding at Ashley Park House, Coolbawn Quay or Cloughjordan House.

Our country house is set in a tranquil location on our family farm in Tipperary, with only the tweet of birds and the mooing of cows as a soundtrack. The area is surrounded by meandering country roads which lead to the local villages, a pub over 100 years old and the majestic Lough Derg set on the River Shannon. The house itself is a very chilled out space with a combination of natural light and cosy corners in which to relax. We have invested in top of the range appliances, stoves and finishes to offer you the comforts of home and a little more. We do not believe in compromising when it comes to our free time and do not wish our guests to either. To quote Forbes, which named Tipperary as one of The 10 Coolest Places To Go in The Next 10 Years, “Warmth and authenticity radiate from every corner”. The Calves Field is centrally located in a quiet rural area in the heart of North Tipperary surrounded by winding country lanes and rolling fields. Cows, sheep and all forms of wildlife are the main residents of the area so a quiet relaxed pace can be taken for granted! The local villages of Kilbarron and Carney which contain traditional institutions of an Irish village most notably the church and the pub are worth a visit to experience famous Irish hospitality. The historical towns of Nenagh and Portumna are notable in the stories they have to tell on Irish history and have all the expected amenities including farmer’s markets and many excellent restaurants for eating out. Not far from the shores of Lough Derg on the River Shannon the house is ideally located to explore the Shannon Region and all that counties Tipperary, Galway, Clare, Limerick and Offaly have to offer. Lough Derg offers a host of amenities and services for families and groups with sailing, water skiing, fishing, boat hire, kayaking and other water activities available. There are also plenty of award winning restaurants and traditional pubs in lakeside villages dotted around the lake. For golfers there are two local courses and many more within 1 hour’s drive. People who like to take long country walks have plenty of routes to choose from on the door step and within a short drive there are marked forest trails to be explored.

We are also lucky to have the amazing wedding venues of Ashley Park House, Coolbawn Quay or Cloughjordan House nearby, ideal for guests attending weddings at each of the venues. Our proximity to each venue also offers couples the opportunity to use The Calves Field as a pre wedding base, allowing them to be alone together with family or friends to put those finishing touches to arrangements and to leave their guests to it. Ideally you will require a car for travel, however we do have a list of local taxi numbers which can be supplied to guests. The local village and Lough Derg can easily be accessed by bike or by foot for those who enjoy a walk.

The Calves Field while worth a visit for any of the reasons outlined above has some unique connections that may be of interest to people interested in music and wildlife.

Shane McGowan of The Pogues fame spent many of his childhood years in the cottage next to The Calves Field in Carney Commons. This is where Shane experienced the many “sessions” which sparked his interest in Irish traditional music. This music was to influence Shane greatly when he began writing and recording music. Shane and the other members of The Pogues along with Kirsty McColl were present in this house in December 1987 when news came through that “Fairytale of New York” had been beaten to the top of the UK Christmas charts by The Pet Shop Boys cover of Elvis Presley’s song “Always On My Mind”.
